So I'm in constant argument with a friend over which version is better. I assert the Japanese version rocks, with unfiltered and intense dialogue, while he gravitates towards the English version because he hates the Japanese voices and likes the English soundtrack. I can't help but wonder if the people who dedicate themselves to the English dubs are missing out - there is a ridiculous amount of censorship, both visually and through dialogue, which I think takes away from the overall badassery of the series. My favourite example? Picture the Ultimate Gohan vs Buu fight scene. where UG appeared behind Buu: Japanese version: UG: "Over here, you retard." English version: UG: "Hi, nice day!" or "Over here buu buu!" - With the censorship in place, Buu's reaction doesn't make any sense... nor does any of the other fighters' reaction to what Gohan said. |

I'm going to tell you the truth Funimation dub is my favorite by a long shot the characters voices the awesome soundtracks themes just make dbz more alive for me

The dub also opens up a few plotholes: In the Cell Saga, Gohan is mistaken for a delivery boy because 'Gohan' means 'rice' in Japanese. In the funimation dub... reporters saw a bunch of fighters and deduced that this one must be delivering food...despite him not carrying anything. But still, each to their own

For me, I'd rather listen to the Uncut Kai Funimation Dub>Original Japanse>Original Funimation. If I could, I'd listen to the Kai Funimation Dub with the Kai Music as well, though I'll be frank I grew up with Faluconer so I've got a soft spot there as well. I feel Funimation has done an excellent job now a days not only with the voice acting itself but with the script and everything else with only a few aspects of the original Japanese I like more. I have nothing against the Japanese version but there's no doubt Funimation has gone above and beyond. |

Uncut English Kai is pretty awesome, though all versions of Kai have some annoying visual censorship. |

English Kai with its full power unleashed is the best to me, otherwise you'd be wise to stick to the original Japanese version lest you want [CALL]The Third Kira[/CALL] to run over your eyeballs with her Jeep. |

Depends on which version you mean. I would take the original Ocean Group VA's over FUNI's any day, their line up with Kelamis as Goku and Drummond as Vegeta was perfect (their Freeza voice was awful, but so was FUNI's). If only they'd gotten a shot at an uncensored DVD release for the series... Japanese adult Goku/Gohan is a deal breaker for me, I just don't think having a woman do Goku's voice works at all. On the FUNi side, I don't like their Goku much better, he misses the naive/dumb hick element of Goku's character entirely, and their Vegeta is constantly loud, grunting and the opposite of quietly malevolent like Drummond or his Japanese VA. For me, if we're going purely best VA line up, the original Ocean Group takes it, but if we're going finished series run I have to take the Japanese one.
